Sea Defence - Hartlepool

Hartlepool Headland – £2 million sea defence project

  • What we provided: Nearly 4,000 units, including concrete panels, copings and handrails
  • Why? To protect from storm damage and erosion caused by rising sea levels, 2 km of the 100-year-old sea wall had to be strengthened

In September 2015 Poundfield announced that we had been awarded our largest ever contract with a £2m order for decorative, reinforced concrete panels from County Durham based Hall Construction Services.

The order was to manufacture thousands of individual pieces that would be used to construct over 2 km of a new Coastal Protection scheme at Hartlepool Headland. A project which was scheduled to take some 5 years to complete.

Bespoke Concrete bases – energy & utilities

  • What we provided: 275 reinforced concrete blocks
  • Why? As part of a new solar farm, archaeological restrictions meant an alternative method of supporting some of the panels without excavation was required

Our bespoke division has recently manufactured a set of 275 reinforced concrete blocks to support an array of large solar panels.

The order was placed by one of our regular customers, Travis Perkins, on behalf of Lark Energy – a Lincolnshire based provider of commercial and utility scale energy systems with a particular expertise in large solar farms and other renewable energy solutions.

Precast concrete slipway at Shoreham Adur

Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls scheme – marine & coastal

  • What we provided: 112 slipway planks and 64 capping beams
  • Why? As part of the £31 million, Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls scheme, the existing metal slipway ras removed and replaced by a bespoke concrete slipway

Our role in this prestigious and vital project was to manufacture and deliver 64 capping beams and 112 slipway planks to the home of the Shoreham Sailing Club. The planks required an exposed aggregate finish on the surface along with drainage channels.

Roker Pier Refurbishment - Installation

Roker Pier – building & construction

  • What we provided: Six bespoke units, including two pod sections, one roof section, two roof thickening beams and one end beam
  • Why? A new building was built at the top of the pier tunnel, allowing safe access for the public

For over a hundred years, Roker Pier & Lighthouse has protected the entrance into the city of Sunderland’s harbour. As part of the Pier’s refurbishment, we were selected by Hall Construction Services Ltd to supply specially manufactured pieces for a new building at the entrance to the tunnel that provides safe access under the Pier to the lighthouse for visitors during bad weather.

Manufacturing concrete plinths for Elmer's Big Parade in Ipswich

Elmer’s Big Parade – charity work

  • What we provided: 47 concrete plinths
  • Why? To support 47 painted elephant sculptures for the charity event Elmer’s Big Parade Suffolk, held in various locations in Ipswich

47 differently painted sculptures of the children’s character Elmer the Patchwork Elephant will sit upon the plinths in locations throughout Ipswich between June and September this year.

Poundfield Products Whitley Bay

Whitley Bay regeneration – sea defence walling

  • What we provided: 1,800 bespoke sea defence wall panels
  • Why? To replace the existing 100-year-old Central Lower Promenade allowing it to be better able to cope with the depredations of the North Sea

In 2017, our bespoke products team, led by director Tim Evans, was commissioned to deliver 2000 bespoke sea defence wall panels to support the rebuilding of the Central Lower Promenade in Whitley Bay, as part of North Tyneside Council’s £36m Seafront Master Plan.

Rail Platforms

Network Rail – Railway Station platform extensions

  • What we provided: 65 bespoke cross beams
  • Why? To extend concrete platforms, allowing the new ten-car trains to operate rather than the old eight-car trains.

Poundfield’s Bespoke division has produced 65 cross beams, each of which is mounted onto footings constructed alongside the rail tracks. Onto these a Block and Beam flooring system is then laid – this consists of a total of nearly 1,000 beams – cut to various lengths of up to 4 metres.

Bespoke Concrete Cattle Grid

Hampshire County Council – concrete cattle grid

  • What we provided: Two reinforced concrete components
  • Why? To reduce the curing time caused by using on-site poured concrete when replacing or installing cattle grids within a reinforced concrete base

A new concept for the rapid construction of cattle grids in the New Forest has been developed by Hampshire County Council to minimise road closure times, particularly when long diversions are involved.
