Retaining wall

When the owners of historic Boughton House near Kettering in Northamptonshire decided to restore a one acre forgotten lake, reinforced concrete walling specialist Poundfield Precast of Ipswich was able to assist with the supply of 320 of its 2 m tall L-Bloc retaining wall sections to form a continuous perimeter wall prior to the re-filling with clear spring water.

Home to the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch, Boughton House dates back to 1528 but was extensively remodelled in the late 17th century along the line of a French palace. The property sits in grounds of some 100 acres which had been neglected for some 200 years but recently have been the subject of a massive project to restore them to their former glory, along with the Grand Etang (French for large lake).

The lake has now been re-dug, its banks reinforced using the Poundfield L-Bloc system and re-filled, complete with an impressive fountain rising to a height of nearly 23 m. The lake is claimed to be one of the largest bodies of water created in recent years and once again dominates the principal approach to the house which is now magically reflected in the lake’s surface.

Commenting on the contract, Poundfield’s retaining wall sales manager Rory Faulkner said: “We were delighted to become involved with this fascinating project which highlights the versatility of our products. We normally see our retaining wall systems used for creating flexible storage areas for applications in farming, waste management and construction so soil on one side and water on the other in the case of the Grand Etang was an interesting challenge.”
