Poundfield Precast celebrated a longstanding relationship this week, as it’s 10 years since we first delivered precast retaining walls to ABP Port of Ipswich.

Back in 2007 we delivered and installed over 400 concrete units at the port, which is the largest grain exporting port in the UK.

These walls are not only still in very good shape but have also proven their versatility in that they are used to store the full range of products shipped through the Port of Ipswich.

With harvest soon to start, these mighty units will soon be full of barley and wheat but at other times are used to aid the storage of aggregates and animal feeds.

The original units installed were 1m wide and stand 4.5m tall. Were this consignment of Poundfield Precast to be placed end-on-end they would be over 40 times taller than the Orwell Bridge!

Matt Moss, our commercial director, said “the Port of Ipswich is a vital gateway for the region and the country’s export drive and I’m proud that our concrete units have played a part in ensuring that the through flow of goods is as hassle-free and as effective as possible. Whatever the weather; bright sunshine, snow or rain our storage units have done – and continue to do – their job in keeping the products in good shape.”

Andy Constable, head of operations at ABP Port of Ipswich added “as a port handling a diverse range of cargoes, we require flexibility when it comes to maximising storage options. Therefore, it is fantastic to see ABP and Poundfield Precast working together to provide storage solutions that aid not just our business but also that of our customers.”

The Port of Ipswich – the UK’s leading export port for agricultural products – invested £5.4 million last year into upgrading its equipment and facilities.

Matt Moss concluded, “we have a great long-term relationship with ABP Port of Ipswich and are both delighted that our walls, as expected, still stand the test of time, but also that we are working with them to make a direct contribution to the region and nation’s exporting efforts.”
