Historically, service cables were often just buried underground and whilst that is safer than having them at ground level, there are still issues with simply leaving them without any extra protection. That includes the possibility of cutting through them during any subsequent works, resulting in possible fatality. They can also start to get damaged after many years left underground depending on the quality of the earth around them and the cable itself.
At Poundfield Precast we offer a bespoke solution where we will manufacture precast concrete troughs and channels to your specific requirements where an off-the-shelf solution is not available.Get in touch
Precast concrete troughs are a much more effective and safer alternative as they provide a number of benefits including easy and quick access to the cables for subsequent repairs or jointing.
Chemically resistant and electrically non-conductive, precast concrete troughs are not subjected to extreme weather conditions, such as freezing or overheating. Designed for easy access to undertake repair or maintenance work, our troughs can be fitted with a flush fitting lid to protect against accidental damage. It also provides security from anyone attempting to purposefully damage or attempt to steal any elements of the cables. Options include concrete trough lids, GRP open mesh lids and GRP solid tops both with anti-slip finish.
Troughs are designed to BS EN 1433 and are extremely durable, keeping cables safe and secure for many years.
Bespoke precast concrete troughs are a much more cost-effective solution than in-situ. Precast concrete is also considerably more sustainable than ready mix concrete due to its minimal wastage. Speed of installation is also a big benefit.
The load bearing capacity of our precast concrete troughs allows them to be used in highway works with vehicles being able to drive over without any issue to the cables below.
Our bespoke troughs have been widely used in a number of sectors like energy plants, wind farms, waste treatment plants and even hospitals, as they allow these important facilities to continue running smoothly.
Poundfield Precast have provided drainage and cabling channels to National Grid sites across the country, including in Burwell, Cambridgeshire where 435, 1220 mm long trough sections were installed to carry excess rainfall to one of nine pump chambers. In order to cast the U-shaped concrete trough sections, our bespoke division constructed a set of ten special steel moulds incorporating the necessary profile to enable cover grills to be fitted flush with ground level.
As each project is different, Poundfield Precast can produce a bespoke solution for you. Our high quality precast concrete troughs and channels can be made to your exact specification.
