Artificial barrier reefs: Boosting marine diversity and fish stocks

Over the years, the construction of energy infrastructure, such as offshore wind farms, has contributed to the loss of natural marine habitats. This has posed significant challenges to marine biodiversity and has impacted fish populations, particularly commercially important species like cod. To counter these effects, Exo Engineering has developed artificial reefs aimed at restoring lost habitats, providing a haven for juvenile fish and other marine organisms.

Canvey Island Southern Shoreline Revetment Project

We provided over 1,000 individually reinforced low-carbon precast concrete steps which were manufactured in steel moulds. The units were made using approximately 235m3 of Cemfree Rapid from DB Group Ltd, an alkali-activated cementitious material (AACM) which has 85% lower embodied carbon than 100% OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) concrete.

Precast concrete box culverts and wingwalls for Eastern Green, Coventry

We supplied 131 precast culverts units along with 96 wingwalls/headwalls. The culvert units weighed, on average, 10 tonnes and were manufactured under factory-controlled conditions using steel moulds.
