Interlocking concrete panels used within a newly built Grimsby storage facility

Poundfield Precast of Ipswich in Suffolk has recently supplied and installed a large number of interlocking tongue and groove prestressed concrete panels to Britcon of Scunthorpe. These concrete panels have been used to form a robust retaining wall as part of a new storage building in Grimsby.
Britcon, a civil engineering and building contractor, has erected the 780sq m storage facility on behalf of United Fish Industries – a company specialising in the conversion of fish by-products into fishmeal and fish oil which are then used in the production of various types of animal feed.
The majority of the interlocking concrete panels both supplied and installed by Poundfield measure 4m long, 1m high and 180mm thick as specified. The concrete panels have been erected onto a concrete foundation strip running around the inside wall of the building with each concrete panel firmly secured to the building’s steel support structure using bolt-on clips.
Each of the building’s principal walls are comprised of four 1m concrete panels high with an extra row of 500mm high concrete panels on top. This is in order to provide the required total concrete wall height of 4.5m.
All the tongue and groove joints between the concrete panels have then been sealed to prevent any stored material from escaping. The remaining upper wall areas have then been completed using conventional steel cladding.
Commenting on the choice of Poundfield’s concrete walling system, Britcon’s site manager Luke Raspin said: “The panels have all fitted without a hitch which has helped us stay well on track to complete the project within the specified 16 week build schedule.”

These interlocking tongue and groove concrete panels are commonly installed between steel columns to create a continuous, uniform retaining wall. We offer concrete panels in made-to-measure lengths up to 6.5m long and in a selection of thicknesses up to 300mm depending on the loadings required.
They come with cast in fixing points, can be used with existing steel frames, no foundation is required and they are easy to install. A number of accessories are also available to be used in conjunction with the prestressed concrete panels.
