Grain Store

A north Norfolk arable farmer has recently constructed a purpose-built grain store using a total of 48 pre-stressed concrete panels manufactured by retaining wall specialist,  Poundfield Precast of Ipswich in Suffolk.

The 1 m high panels chosen for the project are 180 mm thick and in a variety of lengths from 3m to 6 m. They feature a cast-in interlocking tongue and groove design on the horizontal edges to allow fast  and easy installation and have been supplied complete with all the necessary clips and bolts to attach them to the building’s steel framework.

Built on the site of a redundant structure, the new 24 m x 21 m store has the capacity to hold up to 1000 tonne of grain and Poundfield’s concrete panel system was chosen for the job as it offered a quick and easy method of constructing a sturdy, 3 m high retaining wall.

Each panel has been bedded onto mastic during the build process and all joints treated in a similar fashion to ensure the whole containment area is sealed. At the top of the wall, a continuous galvanised steel spill plate has also been fitted to prevent grain from falling behind the finished wall.

The farm grows a variety of crops, including potatoes, and the new grain store now doubles storage capacity and will be used throughout the harvest season in conjunction with existing storage sheds around the farm.
