Whitley Bay – First stage of “highest precision coastal project” completed

The man responsible for delivering nearly 2000 precast wall elements to protect and enhance a seaside resort has described the operation as one requiring the highest degree of precision in planning, logistics and delivery.

Tim Evans, director of bespoke products at Poundfield Precast, the Suffolk-based market-leading manufacturer of quality precast concrete, was speaking as the company delivered an initial 250 bespoke sea defence wall panels to the Central Lower Promenade in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside. This is part of the local council’s £36m seafront regeneration plan covering a stretch from St Mary’s Lighthouse to Cullercoats Bay.

These 250 panels comprise the first element of the lower tier of this project which will see Poundfield Precast supplying a total of 1800 units which will be installed at three different tiers along Central Lower Promenade.

This first set of panels will be secured closest to the sand and need to be in place by October before the autumn tides and weather make further work hazardous.

Tim explained that  “this was a substantial order for us and we have increased production to meet the various deadlines required”.

“We were awarded the contract in April and so were up against a very tight deadline to get the first tier wall panels on site. We had to ensure that not only were all of these bespoke panels manufactured to Poundfield’s usual very high specification, but we needed to make sure they were transported and stored on site in time for them to be installed by the construction company. Any delays could have added to the costs of the project and we were determined to get everything just right for our client”.

“This is a project requiring the highest precision and I’m delighted that we can say that the first stage of operations have been successfully completed.”

The wall panels have been ordered by Hall Construction Services Limited, the company commissioned to re-build the promenade making it both better able to cope with the depredations of the North Sea and more attractive for residents and visitors alike.

Stephen Bromley, business development manager at Hall Construction Services explained that “acting as the principal contractor on this prestigious project, we have worked with Hartlepool Borough Council’s Engineering Team to commence delivering this high profile project for North Tyneside Council”.

“The works comprise the re-construction of the Central Promenade making it suitable to cope with the depredations of the North Sea and maintain its status as a valuable asset in Whitley Bay for residents and visitors to enjoy. As part of the works, there will be new surfacing and paving incorporated into the lower and upper promenades.”
