Poundfield Precast of Ipswich in Suffolk, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of concrete retaining wall and related products, has supplied nearly 1000 bespoke concrete trough to Derbyshire based civil engineering and building contractor Alpha Construction.

The troughs will act as drainage and cabling channels at National Grid sites in Canterbury and Burwell where Alpha has contracts to construct flood defence systems able to cope with 100 year flood events.

At the 132/400 kV Burwell substation in Cambridgeshire 435 of the 1220 mm long trough sections are being installed to carry excess rainfall to one of nine pump chambers which will then transfer the water to the outside of a 1 km long, 1.6 m high concrete perimeter wall topped with an electric fence also being built by Alpha.

In order to cast the U-shaped concrete trough sections, Poundfield constructed a set of ten special steel moulds incorporating the necessary profile to enable Alpha to fit GRP cover grills flush with ground level.

Poundfield was chosen as the supplier of the purpose-built troughs following a tender process which highlighted the company as offering the best combination of price, quality and availability.
